Studs are the backbone of any well-built house. Your studs are a key part of the structure, but several factors determine how much weight they can hold. Whether it be a screw in the stud or an entire stud wall, let’s take a look at how much weight it can hold.
When trying to hang up decorations, TVs, or even lights on a while, the main question is; can your stud hold the weight? Most manufacturers state that most drywall screws will not easily break through them unless you use too heavy tools and/ or force, but they cannot be used as a bolt or anchor. This has nothing to do with how much weight can a stud hold; the screws will easily break through one if you apply too heavy of pressure (prioritizing weight over strength; although this is bad for drywall).
However, a regular screw in a stud holds up to 90 pounds. At the same time, the typical stud wall holds up to 25,000 pounds. On the other hand, the average construction screw can hold a huge weight than a cheap drywall screw.

How to increase how much weight a screw in a stud can hold?
Increase the thickness of the wall studs. To get more from a screw in a stud, the thicker the wall studs are at least 3/4″ to 1″ wide. Thicker walls can withstand heavier weights because there is more material for each hole and it takes some pressure for that extra material to rip out under load so fast does not happen.
Install longer screws into thick walls
Longer screws hold very little force because they do not have as much surface area as short screws with their heads down inside a thinner-than-a-soap bubble of wood, but don’t be fooled because thins build up pressure very fast, so little of a difference in resistance is needed.
